MEXICO: Ayotzinapa investigation falls on more hard times
A key chapter in the investigation into the infamous Ayotzinapa case ended on 31 July, as the inter-disciplinary group of independent experts (GIEI) terminated its collaboration with Mexico’s government on the case. The GIEI, which was initially assigned by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to investigate the 2014 abduction of 43 trainee teachers from Ayotzinapa college, Guerrero state, signalled that its withdrawal did not constitute the end of the investigation, and that the Mexican State had an obligation to bring about justice. However, both the reasons which the GIEI flagged for its withdrawal and the contents of its final report point to continued systematic failings in the handling of the case, suggesting justice remains distant.
