PANAMA: Authorities frustrated over international response to migration surge

Panama’s government led by President Laurentino Cortizo has launched a campaign aimed at stemming the flow of migrants through the Darién Gap, the dense rainforest without roads that forms the natural frontier between Colombia and Panama. With the authorities continuing to report record numbers of irregular migrants attempting to traverse the notoriously perilous jungle [WR-23-31], the Panamanian government is expressing growing frustration with neighbours like Colombia regarding their perceived failure to halt the surge.
