The primary election for Venezuela’s opposition coalition Plataforma Unitaria Democrática (PUD) got underway on 22 August, amid signs of interference by the authorities. The primary election to select a single candidate for the 2024 presidential election will be held on 22 October. In theory, this should help the opposition to overcome its differences and unite around one candidate in the Herculean task of dislodging President Nicolás Maduro’s authoritarian government. Already, however, the primary process seems under threat.
