Police forces in Brazil’s south-eastern state of São Paulo launched Operation ‘Escudo’ on 28 July, a massive deployment of over 600 police officers to raid the coastal municipality of Guarujá, in the Baixada Santista metropolitan area. One of the main objectives of the operation was to arrest the suspects involved in the killing of Patrick Bastos Reis, an operative of the special rapid response unit Rondas Ostensivas Tobias de Aguiar (Rota) of the state military police (PM). Reis was shot dead while on patrol in Guarujá on 27 July. According to state authorities, the death toll of the ongoing operation has reached 16, as of 2 August, making this the deadliest police operation in Baixada Santista since 2006.
