Peru’s health minister Rosa Gutiérrez resigned on 15 June as authorities struggled to contain the largest recorded outbreak of dengue fever in the country’s history. Gutiérrez stepped down after being summoned by congress to answer questions regarding the increase in dengue cases and to provide details on the government’s plan to stop the spread of the virus. The outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease, which as of 28 June had resulted in at least 177,940 cases and 311 suspected deaths, is predicted to worsen with the patterns of the El Niño weather phenomenon.
