COLOMBIA: New senate leader to pose challenge for Petro

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro suffered another blow to his reform agenda on 20 July, when the opposition-aligned Iván Name was elected as senate president. Whilst Name belongs to the divided centrist Alianza Verde (AV), which is broadly supportive of the government’s agenda, he is personally opposed to many of Petro’s reform proposals, and his leadership bid was backed by the main right-wing opposition parties.
