In brief: Brazil’s gov’t forecasts long-term rise in grain harvests

* Brazil’s agriculture ministry has reported its 10-year projections for agricultural production, which predicted the 2032/2033 grain harvest to yield 390m tonnes (t), which would mark a 24.1% increase from the 2022/2023 harvest (313.8m t). The ministry’s report attributed the higher forecast in part to an expected rise in the total land area for cultivation, forecast to increase from 77.5m hectares (ha) in May 2023 to 92.3m ha in 2033. Technological advances in restoring degraded soil were also cited as a factor which would provide more land to be cultivated over the next decade. The report predicted 14.7m ha of degraded land to be restored by 2033. The positive figures for the 2032/2033 harvest forecast were driven mainly by the soybean harvest, predicted to yield 186.7m t, up 20.6% on 2022/23, while strong results were also expected for maize, with a forecast of 160m t.
