In a ruling published on 18 July a Panamanian court found former right-wing president Ricardo Martinelli (2009-2014) guilty of money laundering, sentencing him to serve 10 years and eight months in prison and to pay a US$19.8m fine. Despite this, Martinelli is still considered a credible candidate for the May 2024 presidential election.
