The Mexican government has sent a diplomatic note to the US raising concerns over the decision to implement a new floating marine barrier installation along part of the Rio Grande in Texas, forming the natural frontier between the two countries. The governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, of the Republican party,
said the barrier was part of a multi-billion-dollar programme designed to “deter illegal immigrants attempting to make the dangerous river crossing into Texas”. Mexico’s Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena said on 14 July that Mexico had already requested that the buoys be removed.
