BOLIVIA: Morales revels in latest drug trafficking scandal

Counter-narcotics and corruption are a key frontline in the escalating war between two factions of Bolivia’s ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS). The issue surfaced again in June after Interior Minister Eduardo del Castillo acknowledged that several state institutions had been “permeated” by drug trafficking organisations (DTOs). This was used by former president Evo Morales (2006-2019), widely understood to be preparing a campaign for the MAS nomination in the 2025 election, to escalate his allegations that the government is only pretending to be cracking down on DTOs while secretly allowing trafficking to flourish.
