For the first time in its 59-year insurgency against the Colombian state, the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) guerrilla group has signed a ceasefire agreement. The announcement was made in Cuba’s capital Havana on 9 June at the culmination of eight months of tense negotiations. Many challenges lie ahead as President Gustavo Petro’s government attempts to negotiate the ELN’s full demobilisation.
