COLOMBIA: ELN signs historic ceasefire agreement

For the first time in its 59-year insurgency against the Colombian state, the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) guerrilla group has signed a ceasefire agreement. The announcement was made in Cuba’s capital Havana on 9 June at the culmination of eight months of tense negotiations. Many challenges lie ahead as President Gustavo Petro’s government attempts to negotiate the ELN’s full demobilisation. But Petro can take heart from this historic agreement, which may breathe new life into the government’s struggling ‘total peace’ initiative.
