Nicaraguan Church under siege

Since severing ties with the Vatican following its response to the sentencing of Nicaraguan bishop Rolando Álvarez in February [WR-23-11], the government led by President Daniel Ortega has intensified its attacks on the Catholic Church as part of its crackdown on dissent. Most recently it has accused the Church of various crimes, including money-laundering, and frozen the bank accounts of various priests and dioceses.
