PERU: Dengue drags Boluarte down further

Peru’s President Dina Boluarte made a bold assertion last week that she intends to stay in power until July 2026. Boluarte’s popularity remains rock-bottom and her stated determination to see out the five-year term for which she was elected as the running mate of impeached president Pedro Castillo will not be well-received by the voting public. Social organisations in the southern regions that spearheaded the anti-government protests that raged at the tail-end of 2022 and early this year are preparing to converge on Lima in renewed protest action. Meanwhile, protests have erupted in northern regions against the government’s mishandling of a severe dengue outbreak.
