Mexico’s presidential race began in earnest this week with the announcement by the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) that it will select a candidate in September to represent the party in elections on 2 June next year. The foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, duly resigned his position on 12 June in order to concentrate on campaigning, while the interior minister, Adán Augusto López, indicated that he will follow suit before the end of the week along with the mayor of Mexico City (CDMX), Claudia Sheinbaum, and senate leader Ricardo Monreal. Opinion polls suggest that whoever secures Morena’s candidacy will be the clear favourite to succeed President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1636 words.
