Historic ELN ceasefire marred by campaign finance investigation

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro secured a major boost on 9 June when the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) guerrilla group signed a bilateral ceasefire agreement with his government. The ELN’s participation in a ceasefire will reinvigorate Petro’s flagship ‘total peace’ policy, which has been faltering in recent months. On the same day, however, the storm clouds which have been gathering over the Petro administration began to burst, with the news that the attorney general’s office had opened an investigation into possibly illegal financing by the Petro campaign in last year’s election.
