In brief: Russia and Cuba prepare oil agreement

* Cuba’s Prime Minister Manuel Marrero has announced that Cuba and Russia are preparing an inter-governmental agreement under which Russia’s state-run oil giant Rosneft would supply Cuba with 1.64m tonnes (t) of oil and oil products per year. He made the announcement following a meeting with his Russian counterpart Mikhail Mishustin during a trip to Russia. The announcement comes as Cuba continues to face a fuel shortage crisis which, according to international media reports, is being eased by oil shipments from Russia and Mexico. According to an AFP report published on 10 June citing shipping tracker Vessel Finder, Mexican oil tanker Bicentenario arrived at the port of Havana on 6 June with an estimated cargo of 265,000 barrels of oil. According to the same AFP report, at the end of May, Cameroonian-flagged supertanker Limo, en route from Russia, arrived at the port of Matanzas with some 800,000 barrels. The report cites Jorge Piñon, the director of the Latin America and Caribbean Energy and Environmental Programme at the University of Texas, as saying that the 6 June arrival of the Bicentenario is the third such shipment this year.
