BRAZIL: Green agenda under threat

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva marked World Environment Day on 5 June with a package of ambitious announcements, including a promise to extend environmental protections in the Amazon to an additional area of 30,000km2, equivalent to the size of Belgium. But organisations representing indigenous communities were unimpressed, demonstrating in the days before and after the announcement: they see their rights coming under renewed threat.
