On 18 April the leftist Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) government led by President Xiomara Castro announced a new 10-point plan to intervene in Honduras’s prisons. This was prompted by deadly clashes which occurred on 8 April in four maximum security prisons – indicative of the ongoing crisis in Honduras’s penitentiary system in which gang-related violence and criminal activity remains rife, and which previous administrations have failed to address.
