The production team of a Mexican television news station received a strange letter on 4 May. The letter claimed to be from four sons of the infamous former drug kingpin Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán Loera, who allegedly lead the faction of the Sinaloa drug trafficking organisation (DTO) known as Los Chapitos. The brothers, whom the US Department of Justice (DoJ) recently indicted on fentanyl trafficking, weapons-related, and money laundering charges, downplayed their seniority within the Sinaloa DTO and claimed never to have worked with fentanyl, the deadly synthetic opioid which has become the enemy number one of US security agencies.
