Colombia and Venezuela’s porous 2,200km border has presented both countries with security challenges for decades. Armed groups from both nations have long exploited weak government control to run cross-border criminal and insurgent operations, which in recent years both governments have blamed on each other. Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro took office in August 2022 with a pledge to redress this situation by overseeing a rapprochement with his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro.
