COLOMBIA/VENEZUELA: Increasing security cooperation
Colombia and Venezuela’s porous 2,200km border has presented both countries with security challenges for decades. Armed groups from both nations have long exploited weak government control to run cross-border criminal and insurgent operations, which in recent years both governments have blamed on each other. Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro took office in August 2022 with a pledge to redress this situation by overseeing a rapprochement with his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro. Nearly a year later, the security situation remains precarious, although concrete efforts are underway to bolster cooperation between authorities on both sides of the border.
