Brazil’s congress has begun its inquiry into the 8 January riots, when supporters of right-wing former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) attacked government institutions in the capital. In a boost for the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT)-led coalition government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the joint select inquiry committee (CPMI) chose as its chair on 25 May federal deputy Arthur Maia, a member of centre-right party, União Brasil (União), rather than a far-right legislator aligned with Bolsonaro and his allies, who may have sought to shift blame for the riots onto the current government’s alleged incompetence in protecting the capital.
