After nearly three decades, leading investigative daily elPeriódico has been forced to close its doors in Guatemala. The 15 May announcement that it was ending its online edition, citing “political and economic pressure”, comes less than six months after it stopped its print version, and as its president José Rubén Zamora, an internationally lauded journalist, recently went on trial for crimes including money laundering and influence-trafficking.
