HAITI-REGION: UN’s Guterres in Jamaica, urges action on Haiti

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres has paid a two-day visit to Jamaica where he met Prime Minister Andrew Holness. A key issue discussed was the escalating security crisis engulfing Haiti as gangs exploit the vacuum left by the July 2021 assassination of president Jovenel Moïse (2017-2021). Guterres’s 14-15 May visit to Jamaica was notable given that Holness had previously indicated that his government was willing to send soldiers and police officers to Haiti as part of an international military deployment, for which Guterres and Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry have been calling since October 2022, but on which the international community has yet to act.
