Paraguayo Cubas was arrested on 5 May after orchestrating protests denouncing electoral fraud in Paraguay, particularly outside the headquarters of the electoral authorities (TSJE) in Asunción, and demanding a recount. Cubas, the right-wing populist who finished a strong third in Paraguay’s presidential elections on 30 April, is being held in preventive detention. Efraín Alegre, the presidential candidate of the traditional opposition, who came second in the contest, had initially accepted defeat to Santiago Peña, of the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC), but he too has now adopted Cubas’s demand for a recount.
