NICARAGUA: A new wave of opposition arrests

Last week Nicaraguan human rights groups reported the arbitrary arrests of over 50 opposition figures by the authorities. The local media notes that this was the highest number of arrests in a single day since operations carried out in the context of the 2021 November general elections in which President Daniel Ortega won re-election in a contest widely regarded as fraudulent. It indicates the latest phase in the unremitting crackdown on dissent by the authoritarian government, which earlier this year a United Nations panel of experts accused of crimes against humanity [WR-23-10].
