COSTA RICA: Chaves presents one-year balance sheet

In a speech presented on 2 May, days ahead of his first anniversary in office, Costa Rica’s President Rodrigo Chaves outlined the main achievements of his right-of-centre Partido Progreso Social Democrático (PPSD) government. Having won election through spinning himself as an anti-establishment politician, pledging to root out corruption and cut living costs, Chaves highlighted economic recovery and efforts to tackle crime in his one-year speech. However, his claims have been questioned by his critics while his subsequent decision to replace his security minister in the face of soaring homicides, would suggest an admission that his policy regarding security – which has emerged as his chief challenge – has not been working.
