Mexico’s congress is in recess until 1 September following the closure of the current legislative session on 30 April. A last-minute whirl of activity took place as the session drew to a close, as senators from the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) and allied parties approved a multitude of reforms in an express session held outside of the senate’s usual chamber and without the presence of the opposition bloc.
