BRAZIL: Six indigenous territories gain legal protection

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed decrees on 28 April which gave legal recognition to six indigenous territories across Brazil, a promise made on the campaign trail last year. The current administration is seeking to redress the legacy of the preceding government led by the far-right president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023), under whom all land demarcation processes were brought to a halt. The move to grant land rights to more indigenous communities is also tied to the Lula government’s environmental protection goals, as the official demarcated status (as a ‘território indígena’ or TI) would protect large swathes of land from the threats posed by mining or agribusiness, activities which often contribute to deforestation or environmental damage.
