In brief: Rise in Brazil’s sugar cane production

* The Companhia Nacional do Abastecimento (Conab), the logistics arm of Brazil’s agriculture ministry, has announced that the production of sugar cane from the 2022/23 harvest was estimated at 610.1m tonnes (t), which marks a 5.4% increase from the previous harvest cycle. Conab attributed this rise to increased productivity in the main sugar cane producing states, caused by more favourable climate conditions. Brazil’s south-eastern region, where most sugar cane is produced, saw an increase of 5.8% from the previous harvest, registering 387.76m t. The central-western region saw a similar increase of 5.7%, registering 131.54m t. In terms of sugar cane products, 37m t of sugar was produced, up 6% from the previous cycle, while the production of ethanol biofuels (from both maize and sugar cane) also saw an increase of 2.1%, totalling 30.5bn litres.
