The last 10 days have seen hyperactive diplomacy by Brazil, with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva paying a state visit to China, stopping off briefly at the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and preparing a visit to Portugal and Spain starting later this week. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has also been in Brasília for talks. The common thread: Brazil’s attempt to broker a peace deal in Ukraine, which has been sharply rebuffed by the US and the European Union (EU).
