At least 17 people were kidnapped by the Nicaraguan police (PNN) in the context of the Semana Santa Easter festival according to Monitoreo Azul y Blanco, a local organisation which monitors human rights violations. The repression takes place as relations between the government led by President Daniel Ortega and Catholic Church remain at an all-time low following Pope Francis’s criticism of the Ortega government’s repressive crackdown on dissent, which led Ortega to suspend diplomatic ties with the Vatican last month [WR-23-11]. With the government having banned Easter processions, attacks on the Church have intensified over the Easter period.
