MEXICO: Controversy over new INE president
Guadalupe Taddei was sworn in as president of Mexico’s national electoral institute (INE) on 3 April, becoming the first woman to head up the institute. Taddei was elected alongside three other new councillors, all of whom will serve until April 2032. Her election is expected to usher in a departure from the growing antagonism between the INE under her predecessor Lorenzo Córdova and the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Indeed, the political opposition has suggested she is too close to the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) and her election will ensure López Obrador’s control over the electoral system.
