NICARAGUA: Crackdown enters new phase

“Unprecedented in Latin American recent history”. This was the assessment by Tamara Taraciuk, the Americas director for US-based NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW), of President Daniel Ortega’s recent decision to strip over 300 Nicaraguan citizens of their nationality. In line with the ongoing crackdown on dissent by the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government, Ortega’s latest move has drawn condemnation not just from international institutions like the United Nations (UN), European Union (EU), and Organization of American States (OAS), but also from his South American peers.
