* Manuel María Cáceres and
Anatalicio Risden Junior, the respective Paraguayan and Brazilian general directors of Itaipú Binacional, the operating company jointly owned by Paraguay and Brazil of the Itaipú hydroelectric complex as per a 1973 treaty, have said that outstanding debts arising from its construction have now been paid off. Cáceres said that the final instalment of US$115m (owed to Brazil’s national development bank, BNDES, and state-owned electricity company, Eletrobras) had now been paid off, concluding total debt obligations of US$63.5bn which had been paid over a period of nearly 50 years. Describing the completion of the payment as a “
milestone”, Cáceres noted that since 1984, the Itaipú complex has generated more than 2,900m megawatt hours (MWh).
