In brief: Chile officially joins Tran-Pacific Partnership
* Chile’s foreign ministry has announced that the country is now officially a member of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) trade agreement. Chile is the eleventh signatory to the deal, alongside Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, New Zealand, Singapore, and Vietnam. Chile’s senate finally approved the deal in October 2022, over three years after its ratification by the lower chamber. The foreign ministry stated that Chile participated in a virtual CPTPP meeting as an official member for the first time on 20 February, hosted by New Zealand. The foreign ministry stated that Chile will continuing working to advance the reform and modernisation of the CPTPP’s dispute resolution mechanism. Chile’s President Gabriel Boric has been vocal about his concerns in relation to the mechanism.
