In brief: International tourism up in Mexico

* Mexico’s tourism ministry (Sectur) has announced that Mexico received 38.33m international tourists in 2022, up 20.3% on 2021. According to Sectur, total spending by international tourists last year reached US$26.35bn, up 42.5% year-on-year and up 17.9% on the amount spent in 2019, the year before international tourism was disrupted by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Tourism minister Miguel Torruco said the “historic record” in spending by international tourists in 2022 was “unequivocal proof” that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s tourism policy was a success. According to the latest figures released by the national statistics institute (Inegi), 4.26m international tourists visited Mexico in December 2022, a 15.7% increase on the same month of the previous year. The report shows that the total spending by international tourists was US$2.86bn in December 2022, up 19.2% year-on-year.
