In brief: Chile’s gov’t announces measures for those affected by fires

*Chile’s presidential spokesperson, Camila Vallejo has announced a plan aimed at offering support to those affected by the wildfires that continue to rage throughout southern and central parts of the country. The plan, which consists of 13 measures, includes financial aid for people affected by fires “with the purpose of recovering living conditions, household goods, clothing or any other need”. This consists of payments of either Cl$1.5m (US$1,865) or Cl$750,000 based on the level of impact. The plan also includes access to temporary housing for those who have lost homes in the fires; the provision of free on-the-ground public services such as banking, civil registry and State benefits applications; funding for municipalities of between Cl$150m and Cl$310m to rebuild infrastructure and provide basic services; tax relief and extensions; support for rural zones in the worst affected regions of Ñuble, Biobío, and La Araucanía; and targeted support for indigenous communities, older people and children. The fires have so far destroyed forests over an estimated area of 293,000 hectares and have killed at least 24 people.
