BRAZIL: Yanomami tragedy causes consternation

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva accused his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) of promoting “genocide” this week after the dissemination of images of severely malnourished indigenous Yanomami children and adults. According to Brazil’s health ministry, in 2022 alone 99 indigenous children died of starvation, pneumonia, malaria, and diarrhoea associated with the advance of illegal mining in the region, which contaminates local rivers. In total, more than 500 Yanomami children died in the four years of Bolsonaro’s government, according to reports by NGOs and authorities linked to the Lula administration.
