*El Salvador’s Universidad Centroamericana (UCA), a Jesuit university, has released a new survey indicating that during 2022 74% of Salvadoreans did not use the cryptocurrency bitcoin, which was made legal tender by the government led by President Nayib Bukele in 2021, to buy goods or make payments. The survey by UCA’s Instituto Universitario de Opinión Pública (Iudop) also showed that just 5.1% of the 1,273 respondents thought that the main beneficiary of the law that made bitcoin legal tender had been the public, while 26.3% thought that it was the wealthy and 21.9% thought it was foreign investors. The same survey also revealed economic issues (poverty, unemployment, and the cost of living) to be the main problem facing the country, which was cited by 63.9% of respondents, ahead of delinquency (19.5%).
