Weekly Report - 05 January 2023 (WR-23-01)

Protests against the government of President Dina Boluarte resumed in Peru on 4 January after a truce over Christmas and the New Year. At least 35 roadblocks were erected in six regions, mainly in the south of the country, but there were no violent clashes with the police. There were some calls for Pedro Castillo to be reinstated as president but more calls for congress to be dissolved from some protesters dissatisfied that deputies will retain their seats for over a year, although their terms will be significantly reduced. On 20 December, congress voted to bring both presidential and congressional elections forward to April 2024 in response to the protests, which have claimed a death toll of 26. Just two days earlier it had rejected a bill to bring elections forward to December 2023.
