* Honduras’s leading private sector lobby Consejo Hondureño de la Empresa Privada (Cohep) has issued a statement urging the leftist Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) government led by President Xiomara Castro to prioritise job creation in 2023, which it said requires a “favourable climate for investment and legal certainty”. Cohep’s calls for job creation echoed those made by leaders of national unions like Armando Villatoro, of Confederación Unitaria de Trabajadores de Honduras (CUTH), and José Dolores Valenzuela of Federación de Sindicatos de Trabajadores Nacionales de Honduras (Fesitranh). At the end of December, Ricardo Matamoros, the director of the institute of economic and social research (IIES) at the national public university, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras (UNAH), told Spanish news agency EFE that UNAH was projecting that unemployment would close 2022 at 8%. He said that while slightly down from 8.6% in 2021, this was still higher than levels registered prior to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic which struck in March 2020.
