Denis Lichi, the head of Paraguay’s state-run oil company (Petropar) has announced his resignation. In a resignation letter sent to President
Mario Abdo Benítez, which has been circulated by the local media, Lichi stated that he was resigning as he was
“engaged in a new political project”. Lichi is running as a pre-candidate for the governorship of Cordillera department for Fuerza Republicana, the faction of the ruling Associación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) loyal to Abdo Benítez. The elections will take place as part of general elections in April 2023, in which the country’s new president will also be elected. Lichi, who had served as Petropar’s president since April 2020, has faced repeated criticism of his management of the state-run oil company, following repeated protests over high fuel prices this year, most recently
from lorry drivers.
