*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest employment figures, showing that unemployment stood at 8.9% in the rolling quarter ending in August. This is the lowest unemployment rate in seven years in Brazil. The number represents a decrease of 0.9 percentage points on the preceding rolling quarter (March-May), and of 4.2 percentage points year-on-year. August was the sixth consecutive month to see a drop in unemployment rates, which suggests a recovery in Brazil’s job market after a sharp deterioration during the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Despite the improvement, 9.7m people are unemployed while 39.3m have informal jobs.
