The US Department of State (DOS) has upended Paraguayan politics in the space of three weeks. Fresh off the back of blacklisting the influential former president and tobacco tycoon Horacio Cartes (2013-2018) [WR-22-30] on 22 July, the DOS similarly accused Vice President Hugo Velázquez of “involvement in significant corruption”, prompting his resignation on 12 August. Velázquez also withdrew his pre-presidential candidacy ahead of primary elections in December. Both factions within the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) have now been publicly tarnished by corruption.
