In early July, Bolivia’s left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government announced that it will invest B$62.3m (US$9.07m) in the creation of a state-run company to process coca leaves on an industrial scale. The company, to be known as Kokabol, will initially be producing toothpaste containing a coca-derived compound that research suggests can help prevent dental cavities. The intention in the long-term is to develop more products derived from coca and other traditional medicinal plants.
