* Poverty in Brazil’s metropolitan areas has increased from 16% in 2014 to 23.7% in 2021, according to a study carried out by private Brazilian university Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), local research institute the Observatório das Metrópoles and regional research initiative Red de Observatorios de la Deuda Social (RedODSAL). This equates to a total of 19.8m people living in poverty in Brazil’s biggest cities, an increase of around 7.2m over the study period. The study found that the extreme poverty rate in large cities more than doubled over the same time period, rising from 2.7% to 6.3%, or 5.2m people.
