GUATEMALA: Broadening the crackdown

The arrest of one of Guatemala’s most prominent journalists, José Rubén Zamora, the president of national daily, elPeriódico and a well-known critic of President Alejandro Giammattei, is fanning concerns that the government crackdown on independent judicial operators [WR-22-25] is being extended to a new target – the media. This comes amid continued fears regarding a general backsliding on democracy under Giammattei, who has previously been implicated in a bribery scandal [WR-22-07], and the discredited head of the attorney general’s office (AG), María Consuelo Porras, who was sanctioned by the US over corruption and whose re-appointment in May prompted widespread condemnation [WR-22-20].
