*Empresa Eléctrica La Habana, a state utilities firm which provides electricity services in Cuba’s Havana province, has announced that the capital will face a series of electricity blackouts, in what is the latest sign of the worsening energy crisis affecting the island. The outages will be scheduled in Havana’s municipalities during peak mid-day hours from 1-8 August. The capital had largely been spared the blackouts which have been afflicting other parts of the country for months and stem in large part from the poor condition of Cuba’s power plants. Cuba’s state electricity company Unión Eléctrica (UNE) said that yesterday 2,608 megawatts (MW) of energy was available nationally against a peak demand of 3,000MW, leaving a deficit of 392MW at peak times. The issue is of particular concern to the Cuban government given that frustration over the blackouts was a driving factor in the unprecedented July 2021 anti-government protests which stemmed from economic, political and health-related grievances.
